Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling)— We have been busy learning letters and their sounds! The letters we have already learned are: a,b,c,d,f,g,i,m,n,o,s,t,u! Check to see if your child knows these letters, the correct letter formation, and their sounds. The more practice the better!
*Writing—We have been busy in writing workshop improving our illustrations. Students are learning: how to write independently; that their illustrations help readers understand their stories; that writers match their illustrations to the topics of their stories; and how to turn & talk with friends to help plan their books! Students will continue to be encouraged to write more words and/or letters in their stories by sounding out words slowly. Please help your child practice saying words slowly, listening to each part of the words, and write the letters that they hear!
*Math—This month we will begin a new math unit on Operations and Algebraic Thinking. Adding, subtracting, and decomposing numbers are new math skills we will cover in this unit.  Can your child identify and write numbers 0-20? How high can they count? Remember counting to 100 by 1's and 10's is our end of the year goal!
*Reading— Last month I started small reading groups as I mentioned in our daily emails. I will continue to send your child's book home in their take home folder. Please read these with your child but return in blue folders DAILY so it can be switched out easily! If your child does not have their take home folder, their book will stay at school. *I will start assessments soon. When I do, I will postpone small reading groups until assessments have been completed.
Reading daily with your child in some fashion and asking questions about the story is a great way to foster good reading habits! Don't forget Raz Kids is a great reading option!

IB News:
*An IB attitude that we are investigating is empathy. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. For example, when we say hurtful things to someone, "putting ourselves in their shoes and feeling what they are feeling" may help us reevaluate our actions. Please continue this conversation at home to help your child see the value of being empathetic.
*This month we will begin discussing our family traditions! Please start talking about your family traditions with your kids and your feelings about your traditions. Decembers Family Craft will be about our family traditions! Stay tuned!

Homework Suggestions:
*Please help your child practice shoe tying.
*Practicing sight words is a great way to improve reading. I hope you are finding the Sight word booklet given at our fall conference helpful!
*Practice writing first and last name the kindergarten way (capital at the beginning the rest lowercase)
*Read the underlined sentences above under Curriculum Highlights for other homework suggestions.
*Family Craft: A piece of construction paper that is cut in the shape of a feather was sent home! You can decorate the feather any way you want! Sequins, stickers, glitter, yarn, noodles, and any other kind of material can be glued on it! We will make a big class turkey using all our feathers! Please return these promptly so they can be displayed!

Class Wishlist:
*Please send in a cantaloupe size pumpkin to school by November 11th for your child!
*Any extra pumpkins sent in would be greatly appreciated. We will do some math activities and paint them at the conclusion of our week learning about pumpkins/fall!
