Curriculum Highlights:
* Word Work (Spelling)—In August, we started our phonics/handwriting program. The focus was on getting the kids familiar with materials and procedures that we will use daily (30 minutes).  Each week new letters will be introduced.  So far letters t, b, f, m, n, i and u have been covered! Please review these letters and their sounds for extra practice!
*Writing—We have been learning and using multiple strategies for gathering writing ideas. Students are: building stamina as writers; learning how to write independently; using our "Where Writers Get Ideas" class anchor chart during writers workshop; and turning & talking with friends to brainstorm writing ideas! This month we will focus on writing more words and/or letters in our stories by sounding out words slowly. Please help your child practice saying words slowly, listening to each part of the words, and write the letters that they hear!
*Math—This month we will continue working on counting to 20, recognizing numbers 0-20, one to one correspondence, and identifying/counting sets to 20. We even learned how to count to 10 in Spanish! Please help your child practice writing numbers 0-20. Go higher if your child is ready to go further!
*Reading—We are continuing to learn about the parts of a book, concepts of print, how to pick "just right" books, and how important it is for us to pay attention to what we are reading.
Please read daily with your child and ask questions about the story to see how well they understood the book! Raz Kids is a great reading option!

Class expectation:
We are continuing to review classroom expectations in our classroom, school building, and playground. Respect is what most of our conversations are about. For example, respecting others personal space by keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. Rough playing (pushing, hitting) is also occurring. Please continue this conversation at home.
